My memories of Jello involve 10-year-old me pounding bright blue raspberry jigglers at swim meets before my race started. Not for any kind of nutrition-for-athletes purpose, but because they were delicious and $.25 for a giant rectangle of goodness.

After a long period of my life that hardly included any jello at all, I’m back into it. Not the neon overly-sweet kind in the little box, but unflavored gelatin. Have you heard any of the hype around collagen? Would you be surprised if I told you that gelatin is derived from collagen and has most of the health benefits at a FRACTION of the cost? You know I love a good deal.

Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in the body but how much our bodies produce decreases with age, one of the reasons supplemental collagen is so popular. Collagen is derived from gelatin and the two products offer many of the same benefits like gut health, joint health, and even help with sleep. The main distinction is that gelatin gels in liquid while hydrolyzed collagen does not.

In my book, the BLW Baby Food Cookbook, there is a recipe for whole fruit gummies which we love to make. This version is even simpler and packs in extra calories and nutrients important for babies and toddlers with whole milk and greek yogurt. They’re super creamy and melt-in-your-mouth, perfect for a baby-led weaning snack or quick meal addition.

My favorite unflavored gelatin is NuNaturals, it’s derived from grassfed cows but doesn’t cost quite as much as some other brands. You can also use the Knox variety found in the baking aisle at most grocery stores. Try this recipe with any flavor whole milk greek yogurt!
